Background of the Study
Global energy security is a critical concern for nations worldwide, and strategic alliances play a pivotal role in ensuring stable energy supplies. The relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia has long been central to global energy politics, influencing oil markets, security arrangements, and diplomatic interactions (Thompson, 2023). In Lagos State, economic and political ties related to energy trade are significantly impacted by this bilateral alliance. Strategic partnerships between the US and Saudi Arabia facilitate technology transfer, joint investments in energy infrastructure, and coordinated responses to market fluctuations. These alliances are essential for managing risks associated with energy supply disruptions and for fostering innovation in renewable energy technologies (Garcia, 2024). However, challenges persist, including geopolitical tensions, market volatility, and differing national interests that can complicate cooperation. This study investigates the strategic alliance between the US and Saudi Arabia and its effectiveness in addressing global energy security challenges, using Lagos State as a case study. It examines the mechanisms of cooperation, the benefits and risks involved, and the broader implications for regional and global energy stability.
Statement of the problem
Despite the strategic importance of the US–Saudi alliance in addressing energy security, persistent challenges such as geopolitical tensions, market instability, and divergent policy priorities often complicate cooperation (Okoro, 2023). In Lagos State, these challenges affect the local energy market and economic stability. This study seeks to determine whether the US–Saudi strategic alliance effectively mitigates global energy security risks or if its inherent limitations undermine its benefits. It aims to identify critical obstacles and assess the overall impact of this bilateral relationship on energy security in the context of regional dynamics.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of the US–Saudi alliance in addressing global energy security challenges.
To identify challenges that hinder effective cooperation.
To propose strategies for enhancing the alliance’s impact on energy stability in Lagos State.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of strategic alliances in energy security, with a focus on the US–Saudi relationship. Its findings will inform policymakers, energy sector stakeholders, and international relations experts on optimizing bilateral cooperation to mitigate energy risks. The study’s recommendations aim to enhance the effectiveness of strategic alliances, contributing to a more secure and stable global energy market (Thompson, 2023; Garcia, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the US–Saudi strategic alliance in the context of global energy security with a case focus on Lagos State. It does not cover other bilateral energy partnerships or regions.
